I woke up to find out the winners for the Visual Culture Awards were announced this morning, and I’m happy to see classmates Maisie Crow, Xiao Mei Chen and Shaena Mallett on the list of winners. In the photography world it seems like we at times are almost burdened by trying to get our name out there in any way possible in order to increase the chances that we can one day pay our bills with this passion. This new competition seems to be a breath of fresh air in the hyper-intense competition world. Personal vision, personal photographs and artistry are encouraged. You need only go to the website of the creator Mikayla Mackaness to get a sense of the ethereal way she looks at the world, a way that I think is very important and sometimes lost in the contests that put news value over anything else. Of course those other competitions have their place, and news value in photographs is very important, I don’t mean to take anything away from this. It’s just not everyone’s bag, and it’s good to see that recognized. So, thanks Mikayla for putting your personal vision for a contest into reality. I guess I should say that I’m also happy to be amongst those recognized, which is very nice … but it is really the idea of the competition and the execution, and general aesthetic and mindset of the thing is what really excites me.

And don’t miss the award list. My favorite part about contests isn’t so much looking at the photos (weird, huh?) but reading the stories and backgrounds of the photographers who took part. What was cool about this competition was that they put forth a brief bio of everyone who placed in any way. It’s pretty interesting (to me, at least). Check that out the winner’s list and bios.

This, and, again I have retooled my website and it is ready for display once more. It is simlar to my current design, a little simple, more easily updatable, no Flash and a lot faster loading. This will keep things easy to update in the future. Check it here.
