I recently posted a short selection of work from my Lake Michigan shoreline project. It’s only just a sampling, beginning etc. that I’m planning to build off of this year.

Also, some good folks in the photo and art worlds have recently showcased more of my work. Jonathon Cherry at Mullitover got an early morning interview from me. Pete Brook’s regarded Prison Photography blog showcased some of my Bryan House work, and the monthly online gallery Entopic Group provided me with an April online solo show for my Fox River Derivatives Project. I’m always thankful for these opportunities that help spread the work, especially Bryan House. On that note I still have a few prints left for $40 where proceeds will go straight to the Bryan House organization.

Also, I think now is as good a time as any to note that this blog has taken on a decidedly more professional tone than when I first began keeping it, and I update it less often. The way I approach photography is different than when I started this blog years ago and I no longer have a desire to update with new photos all the time. I am still shooting, but it is more important to curate the work displayed, and I want to keep this blog more strict to my assignment and project photography work.

I have mixed feelings about that since I always valued a personal touch in the photo blogs that I read, so I’ll take this opportunity to point out that awhile back I started a Tumblr….  www.ordinarypictures.tumblr.com that serves as a more personal outlet with photos from when I go running, as well as other random things.

A little while ago I got to take a quick trip to some new spots along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Much of the time that I am photographing in nature I am looking for a way to make sense of the chaos that is often presented, or a way to embrace it at the very least. Rarely do I find such an opportunity as the one presented above.

Also I just want to take this moment to wish anyone reading a fruitful and happy New Year, and thanks for looking at this work. I’m very thankful to anyone and everyone who helps me to continue to keep making photos. Here’s to more of it in 2011.

There’s something great about hiking a barren place on cloudy, cold October days when no one else in the world finds it to be a suitable activity.

More from the periphery

It’s been my intention for a long while now to do a project that centers around Lake Michigan. This is something that will probably wax and wane for some years and although I have a more cohesive vision in my mind for how I think it will go, these pictures are only sketches from the few opportunities I took to make images this summer. They are from different spots on and near the lake, and that’s all that really matters for now.

I went to go watch the kitesurfers recently…I think that’s a sport I’d love to get into. Also made a few “sketches”, or brainstorming pictures as I like to call them. Hopefully more to come. .
