I usually like to do my long drives at night, or at least begin in the evening. Roads are empty, it’s cooler outside, and there isn’t shit that’s new to see driving through Indiana anyways, having done the drive so many times. I’ve had too many long drives, especially this past week, making what would have been a journey ending at 2:30 am a journey that ended at about 6 am. I got the swervies. Falling asleep at the wheel. If that happens once I slap myself till the next exit and recharge, or pull over right away if need be. I slept outside a BP Amoco and at a random rest stop between Lafayette and Merrilville, Indiana.
Today is the vernal equinox, the longest day of the year. That’s good because the sun is up at its earliest, waking me up while the roads are still empty, and giving me the chance to see the Illinois-Michigan Canal that my great grandpa once worked on in a way that I haven’t before. It’s always weird pulling over on the highway to make some pictures, because things look so nice from the point of view I show, but if I turn around and take ten steps a semi-truck will mean the end of me.

These are some really beautiful images. I heard you got that Rural Photo Fellowship for the summer. Have a blast with that.
