I often have to battle with this question right now:
Why am I in graduate school for photojournalism …. when every week another large newspaper is offering buyouts or straight up trashing large percentages of their workforce?
Essentially I’m here for a profession that is ceasing to exist … in it’s traditional costume at least.
To me there is still nothing more important than making sure your pictures have a story behind them though, and this is why I’m here. Sometimes I’m not sure what sort of photography I’ll end up doing for a career (and maybe it will be a mish mash of types) but I know that no matter what it is, if it fails to convey a story, something visceral and not statistical, something that people can actually relate to …. then it’s doing it’s job.
That’s the point. Not to get a job. Not to schmooze all the guests here for contacts. To make better photos and make sure they do their job in getting a reaction out of viewers.

That’s the question that keeps me from going to grad school, as bad as that may be to say. I have a staff job that ain’t going away, I may into risk, but god only knows what’s going to be happening in 3 years. I do like to remember one thing, content is king more than ever. I method for it to be monetized and provide salaries, and profits, will be found. It’s just that no one knows what that will look like yet. At the end of the day though, if you can make a good photo, are dumb enough to be persistent enough,
and want it bad enough, there will be away.
