The past week I’ve been staying in this beach house/mansion thing that is probably the nicest beach house I will ever stay in. Southern Shores, North Carolina. We have a pool, and on the deck of that pool is a pat
hway that leads to the beach…of all places…the biggest pool you could ask for. Maybe a little saltier and jelly fishier but a giant pool nonetheless. Redundant?
I guess another difference is that the pool is lit. Most would say you can’t swim in the ocean at night…but according to a lot of the people I have been friends with it just takes a few beers and you can definitely swim in the ocean at night. In fact I’ve seen it happen quite often….
Anyways, It’s my aunt’s 60th birthday and this is what she wanted. Everyone here in a big ass house and a section of beach that sorta belongs to us (for the week at least). Something strikes me as a bit off when it comes to private beaches and the possession of shoreline. It’s constantly changing water and sand. The ownership is completely theoretical. Sure you could buy a section of beach, but by next year the grains of sand you purchased might well be 100 feet off of shore or hell, they might even be in New Jersey or even on an Irish beach.
But, there is family here I haven’t seen in too long. It’s good to see them… It all makes sense for this occasion, I can, and have been enjoying this place even if I don’t feel completely right here.
I took my brother and dad out surfing yesterday because the weather decided to grace us with a day of surfable knee to waist high waves. A good day to learn, not a good day to progress. I won’t complain, they both learned to stand and I got a few fun drop ins at least. Two waves even held out a little bit before I had to dive through the back and they closed out. I don’t feel like I’m traveling. I’m sleeping in an air conditioned, wireless internet, 17 television, two full fridge, personal theatre equipped house. There’s not a damn thing adventurous or difficult about it…but I can deal with it for a week. It’s still nice here, and there are pretty beaches and sunsets and sand dunes and all that shit. But today is not a good day to surf, so I am lazy. And tomorrow hopefully will be, following a para-sailing trip with my bro and sisters. Sounds like vacation I guess.
