A bed. Man, my own bed. It’s been over a month since I had one of those. The night before last involved sleeping in a stuffy, and shared Geo Prizm with a back seat too full of our garbage to fully recline. We tried sleeping at the north end of Ocracoke Island for about 45 minutes before the complete darkness got to us. At 10:30 p.m. we were a bit restless considering the prior week had been spent falling asleep on the floor in a party house
at hours anywhere between 2 and 7 am.
So fuck it…we drove the extra 200 yards and took the second ferry of the night,
this one free and only 1/3 the time at 45 minutes a journey to Hatteras Island. This second ferry ride was fantastic solely because of the lot of drunken housewives that danced like college party girls around their cars, and the jazz saxophonist that took out his intrument and blasted smooth solos to them for about 10 minutes in the pitch dark.
Anyways, once we got off the second ferry we drove north for like 2 hours or something (however long it takes to make it up that lone stretch of highway 12 from Hatteras to Nags Head.
It took us some scoping and a bit of snoozing at Surfside Hotel, Comfort Inn, and Best Western before we finally fell asleep in the Best Western parking lot for the night. Hotel parking lots are a great place to sleep where overnight parking is not allowed anywhere in this world.
4 hours of on/off sweaty car sleep that was interesting. We left Folly Beach, South Carolina on Saturday morning after throwing a house party the night before (because you have to take advantage of your last night in a beach house, and make a big mess right before checkout….right). The week in Folly Beach was a good one, got to know some new people. Saw some funny stuff.
Surfed a good amount on mostly fairly garbage waves. Not that I can be picky about my waves….I can’t do a whole lot with them other than cruise down a line. But yeah, good week overall. We got a tour of Charleston, South Carolina as well from our friend Todd who used to be a part owner of the local skateshop (RQ)…and he paddled out with us as well. Other details from Folly Beach include Coe’s foot getting wrapped in and stung by jellyfish tentacles, my roommates becoming members at the local social club, an absurd amount of bug-bites and every day topping 110* (at least) heat index.
There was plenty of other stuff too, but that was like three days ago now and to be honest those details aren’t as vivid in my head because I have no way to record them as I go along. Maybe I should think about that…
Anyways yeah….I kinda miss NYC a little bit too, it was fun just being around so many people all the time. They even
carved me a watermelon to say adios. Hell yeah. Thanks Aya and Cindy.
But yeah, now I’m in North Carolina….and last night I slept in a mansion on the beach. Quite a transition from sleeping in a Geo Prizm while trespassing on hotel property.
Back to that road trip up from Folly Beach though….we left at like 10…it was supposed to be an 8 hour trip. Somehow we got to where we were going about 12 hours later. This photo is, shit…I don’t know where it is but it’s somewhere where people don’t really live near the ocean towards the end of leg one on the drive. The worst part of the journey was probably when it started pouring rain and we discovered that our little Prizm was not waterproof with the surfboard rack system we had in place. Water saturated the nylon straps and soaked in the through the door, making my right shoulder and Coe’s left shoulder soaked. We tied wash cloths, sweaters, Hollister boxers (see weird cloth above Coe’s head) and bandanas on the racks to help stop the fl
ooding. The wash cloth on my side got soaked and just made me more wet. At that point, still not even on the Outer Banks we almost gave up, parked under the canopy of a different Best Western lobby and asked about a room. 139$ (over twice our measly budget) and no vacancy…..
okay so we kept going.
Yesterday we got here and just watched people surf and pretty much wasted time on various beaches…and I checked in to this beautiful mansion I am staying at. Later Coe came by after my aunt offered him the extra bed here. Better than sleeping in the car again I would guess.
